Director of Design

I was the founding designer at Lytro, fully responsible for award-winning designs of revolutionary cameras at an audacious Silicon Valley startup.

I worked tirelessly to manage product design execution across all disciplines, starting with the executive team in forming the strategic product vision.  I managed the tactical execution of industrial design, working side-by-side with in-house designers & outside studios, in-house & contract engineers, Asian manufacturing vendors, UI/UX teams, and end users.  I also led accessories, soft goods, packaging design, and supported marketing and operations teams.

Lytro was a special place doing genuinely innovative work, it was an honor and privilege to have led design efforts that made dings in the universe.

LIGHTFIELD CAMERA 1.0

The first Lytro Light Field Camera was developed in a design partnership with NewDealDesign.
Design partners were Chad Harber and Inbal Etgar on ID, and Karl Frankowski on UI.

The Lytro ILLUM was developed in an industrial design partnership with Artefact Group, notably: Markus Wirezoch and Tim Hulford on ID.

As the head of design for Lytro I oversaw all user-touchable aspects of product development.  My direct responsibilities included:

  • Product definition  [features, brand, specifications, insights]

  • Creative oversight  [form, CMF, artwork, team management]

  • Physical UI/UX  [ergonomics, controls, information architecture]

  • Surfacing master model  [Creo master models]

  • Mechanical architecture  [Part layout, breakup, subassemblies]  

  • Packaging  [OOBE, form, artwork, internationalization]

  • General engineering support  [mechanical design, cosmetic manufacturing]

  • Administration  [vendor selection, contract management, project oversight]
