COFFEE STUFF
I like coffee. I also like customizing my coffee things. I’ve had the most fun with a series of little projects modding tampers, portafilters, and grinders.
Bike Hub Tamper
I fractured the drive side of a rear hub and decided to turn the spent shell into a precision adjustable level tamper. Inspired by August Bicycles espresso tampers but without a lathe in the home shop, I busted out my best redneck matching yet. Imperceptible runout & perfect press fits with just files and bad decision making. Centerlock allows for interchangeable ergonomic options - fun but silly. There’s a blurry line between hackery and handcrafted excellence and I am here to ride it.
Grinder quieting
The Baratza Sette is a mid-range grinder that outperforms anything else in its class for ease of use and consistent capability. But it’s loud. I took the edge off mine with mass dampers, acoustic foam, isolating mounts, and then wrote it all up for the coffee forums.
